What Is a Digital X-ray?

A digital X-ray is a machine we can use to take a picture of your teeth, roots, and gum. During a digital X-ray, an invisible, painless beam will pass through your mouth. Then, it will generate an image based on the tissues it passes through.

A digital X-ray creates its image based on density. Heavy tissues, such as bone, show up white. Light tissues, such as air, show up dark. Based on these pictures, we can develop a treatment plan perfect for your needs. 

When Is a Digital X-ray Needed?

There are several situations where we might order digital X-rays. A few examples include:

• We often order digital X-rays for children. X-rays are important for children because they want to make sure the teeth are coming in appropriately.
• We might also order an X-ray if we have questions about your roots. We cannot see the roots of your teeth from the surface, but we can get a better look at them with an X-ray.
• Often, we order digital X-rays before we use oral appliances, such as braces and mouthguards. The information is important for making sure these are all appliances fit properly.
